About

I have a degree in molecular biotechnology and biochemistry from the University of Sydney and a law degree from Sydney Law School and NYU. Before becoming a full-time science writer, I spent ten years as a biotechnology patent litigation attorney in New York, where I specialized in analyzing the scientific and clinical evidence for biotechnology companies and translating complex science into plain English.

At age 26, I was diagnosed with diminished ovarian reserve and told I would have incredibly low odds of being able to conceive with my own eggs. I put my biochemistry and genetics training to work and became obsessed with the science of egg quality and fertility, reading every clinical study that could possibly be relevant.

That research led to my first book, It Starts with the Egg, which provides an evidence-based approach to improving fertility and preventing miscarriage. The book is now routinely recommended by reproductive endocrinologists and IVF clinics and is read by 1 in 3 women undergoing IVF in the U.S.

In the course of researching the impact of environmental toxins on fertility, I came across fascinating data showing that many of the same chemicals can also compromise infant brain development. By minimizing exposure to BPA and phthalates during pregnancy and early childhood, we can give our children the best opportunity to grow up smart and happy. Now, as the mother of two young boys, this led me to wonder what else we can do to support brain development during the critical window of early brain development.

I spent another six months delving deeply into the scientific research on that issue. Brain Health from Birth, my 3rd book, is the synthesis of that research into a series of practical steps that support cognitive development right from the start of life.
